Using Essential Oils for Pets
There is some talk about essential oils and pets on the internet and elsewhere. Question is can we use essential oils around pets? Answer is: Absolutely.
It is important to find the highest quality of essential oil to use around pets. There are essential oils on the market that claim their ingredients 100% pure when in fact the oils are not pure oils. If you choose your oils wisely from reputable companies with evidence their oils are pure then you should have no problem using essential oils in many situations such as diffusing during thunderstorms. Use of high quality essential oils as part of a well rounded health program can actually help your pets thrive and live the best possible life just as essential oils help humans to do the same. The trick is finding the best of essential oils to use.
Ways to check for pureness:
- be sure the oils you choose are third party tested and CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils
Most of us are aware of the strong scenting ability in our pets as pets have millions more olfactory receptors than humans which does make our pets much more sensitive to strong smells, however, pure, high quality essential oils are certainly not toxic. Diffusing around pets is an excellent way to benefit them on a regular basis. Use a water based diffuser and allow a way for the pet to leave the area. Use only 3 to 4 drops of oil at a time in the diffuser on an intermittent setting.
Many animal shelters use Lavender to provide calming effects upon the animals. Petting with essential oils on your fingertips is an excellent way to to apply oils topically to pets along the spine or on the ear tips.
In conclusion essential oils have many benefits for your pets. They can help with:
- calming emotions
- soothing muscles
- easing digestion
- overall wellness of the pet
As with anything new, start slowly with a small amount of a diffused or diluted essential oil and observe your pet's behavior. Keep diffusers in a safe place out of reach of your pet where your pet cannot knock it over, and keep the oils out of reach of your pet.
